One of the most frequent questions sent to the website is "Where can I take my coins to find out what they're worth?"  Any reputable coin dealer in your area should be able to give you a fair estimate for the value of your coins.   (For simplicity, I'm using the word coins here in a generic sense, meaning any numismatic item, including paper currency, medals, tokens, etc.)

The value of your coins depends on several factors that usually work in conjunction with each other. Normally, the better the coin's condition, the more rare it is, and the older it is, the more it will be worth  (Usually).

Before you take your coins to a dealer, it would be best to do a little research on your own.  It would also be a good idea to learn some numismatic terms.

Use the links on the Reference Center page to assist you in your research.  Remember, however, that this is just a very small portion of all that is available to you on the web and in your public library.  The more research you do, the better informed you will be in deciding how (or whether) to dispose of your collection.  Pay particular attention to sources with good images. The more pictures you look at, the better you will be able to accurately judge the condition or your coins.

Good Luck.
